2017 KAWASAKI Z900

Targeting the intermediate skill set, Kawasaki has just unleashed another model for the Z family dynasty and it’s far more than just a beefed-up Z800.

Kawasaki’s built-in smoke machine is sure to make the Zed a winner at school discos.

You could say the current Z range is an important element in Kawasaki’s armoury. Having sold nearly 200,000 Z750s and Z800s across Europe since 2003, this iconic, 26th and final letter in the alphabet gets some fresh digits for 2017 in the shape of the Z900. It’s here I should mention Kawasaki taking heed from the original 1972 Z1, but I won’t…

Before the armchair critics get their knickers in a twist and question its intimate alignment in the range with the Z1000, let’s just have a moment of clarity – the 900 isn’t a supernaked, it’s not even close. Kawasaki is going toe-to-toe with Yamaha’s MT-09, Suzuki’s GSX-S750 and the forthcoming Triumph Street Triple, so the Z900 is a fairly budget middleweight naked that leaves the Z1000 sitting in the extreme segment.

Less is more

So, let’s have an overview shall we, kids? An all-new 948cc four-pot motor powers the Zed, making a claimed 121bhp (12bhp more than the Z800), bereft of electronic gizmos and fancy technology. And what’s this? A steel trellis frame? Oh yes, Kawasaki introduced new chassis technology several years ago (the H2/H2R was the dress rehearsal), and we’re now seeing lighter frames filtering down into more everyday steeds such as the modest Z900. Weighing only 13.5kg, the 900’s frame is even lighter than the Ninja 650’s.
