One simple buying decision can turn your track day from good to great. Rootsy gets to grips with Avon’s sticky tyres…

When it comes to going faster on track, grip is your conduit to more speed. Find more of the stuff, and while it won’t make your bike any more powerful or faster in a straight line, it will enable you to go considerably quicker in the turns – every element of them; entry, apex and exit.

Grip comes from your tyres. Yes, your suspension plays an important part in keeping things rubber side down, but everything boils down to how much grip your tyres can offer. Cover them in oil, ride slicks in a downpour, go out in freezing conditions and tell us otherwise…

Tyres are a consumable item on a bike, particularly if you want to up your pace on track when they suddenly become very consumable. That means you can make a choice to increase your grip by buying a stickier tyre. But what difference can upgrading your rubber make? Will it transform you from the back of a slow session to overtaking everyone in the fast group? Or will you even notice the difference or be able to exploit the newly available grip? The bloke in the tyre shop said you’ll go faster, your mates in the fast group all go quicker on trick tyres and in your head you want to slash seconds from a circulation. But does it all come naturally, or do you have to ride a bike differently? We went to Castle Combe armed with a Kawasaki ZX-6R and two sets of Avon’s finest rubber – the 3D Ultra Supersport and 3D Ultra Xtreme to find out exactly how.
