Friday night drinks at the in vogue wine bars with talk of the latest market and business trends, where friendly rugby and football banter is exchanged along with the up and coming weekend activities is the usual chatter amongst professional men.

However, how many men talk about their fertility or reproductive health with other guys? I wasn’t sure of the answer but after some local research within my own clinic, it wasn’t surprising to find that none of the male participants discussed their reproductive or sperm health to others with exceptions to medical professionals.

Despite the media coverage on the issues of infertility, it is still considered taboo for men to discuss their sperm in a general and relaxed fashion, unlike women who regularly discuss their periods over a cup of coffee whilst learning about women’s health from each other.

In the clinic, it is fair to say where fertility is concerned, women take the lead when something isn’t right and very obvious such as erratic periods, but in general, women are the first to seek help to confirm they are ovulating and that hormones are in check.

35% of men have low sperm count issues

I’ve yet to see guys take the initiative and check their sperm and quality when pregnancy is taking its time.
