A CHANGE IS AS GOOD AS A REST

FERTILITY ROAD’S KATE BRIAN EXPLORES THE THEORY THAT SWITCHING FERTILITY CLINICS MAY BE THE BEST FERTILITY MOVE YOU EVER MADE.

An unsuccessful IVF cycle can be devastating and the first thing you want to do is to find out why your treatment hasn’t worked. If everything has gone smoothly during stimulation, if eggs have fertilised and there are good quality embryos, it is natural to feel hopefully optimistic about the outcome, and frustrated if there isn’t a clear reason why the treatment has not been successful. This is something Gemma knows only too well. She’s just had an unsuccessful cycle at her local fertility unit, and is now considering whether the outcome might have been different elsewhere. “I can’t help thinking I should at least look at other places,” she says.“We don’t have enough money to just keep going on and on if it doesn’t work. We need to know we gave it our best shot and that we chose the right fertility clinic.”

It is not uncommon to wonder after an unsuccessful cycle whether you might have had a positive result at a different clinic, but moving may not always be the best option. As Yacoub Khalaf, Director of the Assisted Conception Unit at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London, explains, you need to balance any concerns against the benefits of staying put. “As long as the clinic is known to have a success rate that is at least consistent with the national average, there is some merit to staying with this particular clinic. They are most likely to use the information gained from previous treatment to modify future treatment accordingly in order to get the best outcome.
