EXPERT Russell Davis

It was 7 o’clock in the morning and they had just got home after a 16-hour flight. They were exhausted. His wife checked her ovulation predictor and said, ‘it’s happening now, we have to do it now!’ There was such conviction and purpose in her voice he knew there was no point discussing it.

They had been trying to conceive for two years. Gradually over that time he thought they had become more and more distant. The fun and closeness seemed to have disappeared from their life. He felt as if he was a bit part to the show. He even felt his genitals were no longer his as they were under his wife’s beck and call. He’d had enough. In that moment, he told her it was over. He couldn’t do it anymore.

Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon story. Thankfully they do not all end the same way. However, the themes of feeling left out, the sens of fun draining from the relationship and feeling more distant are all too common. So why is this the case and what can we do to prevent it?
