I’ve always wanted to be a dad. In fact, a better way of putting it would be that I always expected to be a dad. It’s something you almost take for granted. “Most people do it, so why should I be any different?” I don’t think anybody grows up thinking “when I’m older, I’ll find myself struggling to have a biological child and need to turn to IVF”. But that’s what has happened.

In 2013, two years into my relationship with Victoria and a month shy of my 35th birthday, we decided it was about time I became a biological dad. I had a couple of years of parenting experience under my belt as Vicky already had a four year old when I met her. Grace and I were (and are) a great father-daughter team but there was always that pesky notion of genetics scratching away. A growing need to be able to present my own dad with his heir, so to speak. Sure, Vicky was 42 at this point but lots of people get pregnant north of 40, I told myself.
