Cornish fishermen are up in arms about a controversial new bye-law, designed to protect Salmonids from accidental capture, that fishermen say will cost many jobs and make the inshore mullet and mackerel fisheries impossible. Elsewhere across the UK record high diesel prices are having huge impacts on fishing activity, with many vessels unprofitable and choosing to stay in port. Safety issues are also looked at, both through the sobering MAIB report into the loss of lives on the Newhaven trawler Joanna C and the Scottish potter Saint Peter, as well as a feature from the Seafarer’s Charity on a bid to improve inshore safety.
