With roots in the 1700s, this New York garden combines wholesome history with flea-market flavor, for a storied space that brims with warmth and style.
“WE ADDED THE ROCK FENCE,” Jennifer says. “My husband brought home the locust posts from a farm that was putting up a new fence.”

HOME TO A CHICKEN COOP, A STUDIO AND A FORGE, THIS NEW YORK BACKYARD IS A HUB OF ACTIVITY, WHERE THE WHEELS HAVE BEEN TURNING SINCE THE 18TH CENTURY. Homeowners Jennifer and Richard Lanne collaborated on the space, updating the old while also embracing the new. “My inspiration comes from a sense of history and timeless appeal,” Jennifer explains. “I am also an artist/painter, so bits of that seem to seep in as well.”
