A set decorator transformed a Melbourne, Australia, rental home into an eye-popping paradise overflowing with vintage collections.

THE LIVING ROOM is a study in how neutrals and woods can hold stunning visual interest when used thoughtfully. The teak shelves contain Victoria’s collections of handmade wooden birds and fish, birds carved from cow horns and ships in various materials.

IT TAKES AN IMPECCABLE EYE AND AN UNPARALLELED ATTENTION TO DETAIL TO PUT TOGETHER A MOVIE SET, creating scenes that capture imaginations and inspire questions like, “What type of person has the know-how to track down such amazing décor?”

Victoria McKenzie happens to be one of those ingenious people. She’s worked as a set decorator and art director for several Australian films and television shows, including all three installments of The Lord of the Rings. “I love my job as a set decorator,” Victoria says. “Every day is different. We create whole rooms that reflect the characters in the script. We research and build up the look for each character for each location, which means a lot of op shopping.” Op shopping is short for “opportunity shopping” and is the Australian equivalent of thriftstore shopping.
