FlyPast  |   December 2021
The December 2021 issue of FlyPast features an air-to-air view of Hawker Sea Fury FB.11 D-CRZY on its cover, shot by Luigino Caliaro during a photo sortie from Ravenna in Italy. The Sea Fury was the last of the major piston-engined fighters to enter service with the British Fleet Air Arm, and undoubtedly represents an apex of design for this type of combat aircraft. This example, originally WJ298 in British hands, is now owned and operated by respected Italian pilot Stefano Landi.
FlyPast Classics – Short Stirling
Although not the most successful of the RAF’s World War Two bombers, the four-engined Short Stirling was the first of the ‘heavies’ and certainly the largest. It could carry a substantial bomb load over a good range, and later versions had a successful second ‘life’ as glider tugs and transports. Malcolm V Lowe assesses this British colossus, supported by Andy Hay’s exclusive artwork.
Connie’s return
Gen Douglas MacArthur’s Lockheed Constellation is close to making a return to American skies. Frank Mormillo reports.
Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show
Reports and images from Duxford’s recent Battle of Britain Air Show, plus the successful return of the Reno Air Races and California’s Aero Antique fly-in.
Tale of two Chipmunks
Dave Unwin has flown two very different Chipmunks. Here he compares them both, with air-to-air photography from Keith Wilson and Darren Harbar.
Catalina ‘Miss Pick Up’
One of Britain’s best-loved warbirds, Consolidated Catalina Miss Pick Up still flies thanks to the dedication of a small group of enthusiasts. Luke Bimm meets them and straps into the cockpit.
