With spring in full swing we're both celebrating the freshness of the season and looking forward to the gardening year ahead with the sense of optimism and intent that spring always inspires. Head gardener Benjamin Pope starts a new practical series that offers advice on seasonal jobs for the kitchen, flower and ornamental gardens beginning with what to sow and plant out this month. Tom Coward offers his recommendations for the best plants and trees for April and plantsperson Jimi Blake shares his obsession for the elegant, arching woodlanders that make up the Polygonatum genus. We also offer expert tips on how to design a family-friendly garden and provide plenty of garden inspiration – from the strongly structured Upton Wold in the Cotswolds to the natural beauty of organic garden Nant-y-Bedd in the Brecon Beacons and a small, smart city courtyard garden that uses a palette of green tones, textures and plant types to enfold and soothe. There is plenty of colour too, with a celebration of tulips that this month bring a burst of bright energy to the Cambridge Central Mosque and three leading flower growers suggest a selection of plants to grow at home that can be combined into beautiful bouquets or table decorations.

Great magazine

One of the best of it's kind for all those interested in gardens Reviewed 09 April 2022

THE BEST GARDEN MAGAZINE ANYWHERE

I have been carefully reading garden magazines since the early 1970's and while Horticulture, Garden Design, Fine Gardening and Garden Gate are valuable publications... none, in my opinion, can compare to Gardens Illustrated. Each month's issue begins with a section on wonderful and unusual plants for the garden that month. The gardens that are highlighted in each issue have in-depth descriptions and lavish photos... including whole page and double-page photographs. Unlike the small photos in American garden magazines, the photos in this magazine are large enough and detailed enough to give you a real sense of what that garden is all about. There are also extensive articles on specific plants... one issue contained an article on Primulas with 16 large photos and another article on Tulips with 19 beautiful photos. The same issue contained an article on a Japanese garden that included 17 large photos. If, on any level, you appreciate flower gardens and the beauty of garden plants you will simply love this publication. Reviewed 27 June 2019
