We accept the popstars we think we deserve.

It’s been a little more than a year since Years & Years topped the charts with their breakthrough single King, throwing themselves into the forefront of the collective public consciousness. And it’s been a little less than a year since frontman Olly Alexander spoke about his sexuality for the first time – in the pages of this very magazine, no less.

Since all that, 25-year-old Olly has taken us on quite the journey. We’ve proudly watched his metamorphosis from the handsome boy-next-door pop singer into the man we see today; a gritty, no-nonsense artist-cum-activist ready to fight the queer fight any way he can.

“It really blows your mind how much can change in a such a short amount of time,” Olly muses, “but once you get on the promo trail, you end up doing a million interviews, and I was getting asked questions about my sexuality relating to the world of pop music and wider culture. I just realised I didn’t want to be silent anymore. I had something to say, so I started saying it.”
