AGAINST THE LAW

Brian Fillis’ new BBC drama charts journalist Peter Wildeblood’s and the consequences of his affair with serviceman Eddie McNally. More than ten years before the decriminalisation of homosexuality, Peter and his friends Michael Pitt-Rivers and Tory politician Lord Montagu would be found guilty of homosexuality and jailed – with Eddie giving evidence against his former lover. It was one of the most explosive court cases of the 50s, opened up the debate around homosexuality and influenced the Wolfenden report and the passing of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act. Alongside Peter’s tale, Against The Law features real-life testimonies from an ensemble of men that lived in world where chemical aversion therapy was applied in an attempt to cure them of their ‘condition’. We joined the BBC cast – including Daniel Mays and Mark Gatiss – on set to learn more about a drama that documents a past that’s still within the reach of living memory…
