Tab Hunter

If Tab Hunter sounds like an all-American boy, you’d be right. Even if you haven’t heard of him. Back in the 50s, Hunter – now 84 – was the Harry Styles of his day; a gorgeous singer/actor whose Young Love knocked Elvis Presley off the top of the US charts and sent young girls into paroxysms of hysteria. Even as a kid, this New York transplant had been traumatised by the excessive female attention at school. He later beat out James Dean and Paul Newman to star in a film called Battle Cry, a huge box office hit in 1955, and was regularly escorted by Natalie Wood – he was her date when she was Oscar-nominated for Rebel Without a Cause.

He had a secret, of course. One he announced only in 2005 when he was almost 74 and his biography, Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, was released. (Tab Hunter Confidential is also now a documentary, coming soon to DVD, its protagonist hopes.) Anyway, Hunter is gay, and he’d been outed once previously, when a 50s gossip rag, Confidential, reported his arrest at what he now calls, somewhat coyly, “one of those parties”.

Tab now, at the age of 84.
