Hacksaw Ridge ICYMI, Mel Gibson’s had a rather, erm, ‘turbulent’ few years. So there’s understandable interest in Hacksaw Ridge, his first directorial effort since 2006; especially since it’s being tipped for all manner of Oscar success and could reposition him as a major Hollywood player. While the explosions, limb-flinging and gunfire ensure it’s an unabashed war movie, this biographical tale of an American pacifist combat medic (admirably played by Andrew Garfield) who survived World War 2 is all about peace. Cynic or not, it’s a skilfully crafted redemption tale with a soberingly timely message.

Sing Love ‘em or loathe ‘em, the Minions are a globally loved, billiondollar-spawning force to be reckoned with. So Illumination Entertainment’s latest hyper-colourful, hyperhyper family animation has a lot to live up to (in box office receipts alone). What looks fun on paper (a variety of A-list voices play an array of super-bouncy, adorable animals singing modern pop hits) is diluted by its own relentlessly scatty pace (the moment you start enjoying a warble, it’s already skipped onto the next) and too many characters you simply don’t care about. But the kids will love it.
