Review of 2015

Cucumber by Russell T Davies

2015 has been a big year for the LGBT community, with impressive strides made in the battle for equal rights around the world. Same-sex marriage was legalised in both Ireland and America, several prominent athletes including Keegan Hirst and Sam Stanley came out and proved you can be gay and damn good at sport, while Russell T Davies premiered not one, not two, but three LGBT series – his first since the groundbreaking Queer As Folk.

Trans issues have been firmly in the media eye this year, most notably Vanity Fair’s “Call Me Caitlyn” cover, where the retired Olympic athlete introduced the world to her true self. The BBC ran Boy Meets Girl, which became the UK’s first mainstream sitcom to feature a trans actor in a leading trans role, while trans fitness model Aydian Dowling made it to the finals of the Men’s Health Ultimate Guy competition.
