MARC ALMOND Hits and Pieces It’s tempting to compare Marc Almond to another early 80s icon, Cyndi Lauper. Their music is pretty different, but both artists made an unforgettable first impression – Almond with Soft Cell classics Tainted Love and Say Hello, Wave Goodbye – then used their oddball charisma to build enduring and brilliantly unpredictable careers. Hits and Pieces is filled with colourful alt-pop gems that you’ll wish you remembered to play more often. Who else could pull off something like Stories of Johnny, a tender song about a rent boy that Almond sent into the Top 40 in 1985?

RIGHT SAID FRED Exactly! Though Right Said Fred’s ninth album features the odd sombre moment like Raining in England, a ballad with a hint of Burt Bacharach to it, the Fairbrass brothers haven’t lost their sense of fun. The slinky Sweet Treats was apparently inspired by their love of British Airways desserts, while Only When We La La Love shimmies like a lost Geri Halliwell single. Best of all is We Are Believers, an anthemic slab of disco-rock that sounds like a Latvian Eurovision song – one that would finish at least 20 places higher than whatever the UK sent that year.
