Gaming and Geeking

Out 13 May on all formats

The Doom series, rather like the Street Fighter series, feels like it’s always fighting against its heritage – along with the hell-spawn trying to kill you from the get go, of course. But DOOM – formerly Doom 4 – somehow still has us all breathless with anticipation. Perhaps it’s because, with fighting games, the beauty is in the control system more than the evolution of the system it’s played on. But whatever its trick, there’s plenty about DOOM that feels fresh – not to mention spectacularly gory. The story is a familiar one – portal to hell opens up, spills out, you gotta kill everything – but the welly today’s consoles and PCs are bringing to the party means you really do feel as though all hell has broken loose. Creatures are truly grotesque and more ferocious than ever and, Christ, the amount of them! We’re at once mired in a world of cliché and absorbed in the shock of the new – chain sawing a demon to death has never felt so visceral, so wrong and so satisfying. Good job we’re vehement deniers of the ‘video games cause psychological problems’ debate, we say, twitching.
