When (Gay) YouTubers Ruled the Earth

Look at him. Joey Graceffa. Look at his face. It’s perfect, isn’t it? Eyes you could lose yourself in, cheekbones you could slice bread with, and the kind of smile that says butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth. But his face – that of just a regular, 24-year-old gay guy from Massachusetts – may well be one of the most influential in the world.

Easy to see why we’ve chosen Joey Graceffa for our cover, isn’t it? He’s beautiful. So much so that, during his shoot, we ask him if he’s familiar with the plot of John Travolta and Nicholas Cage’s classic flick Face/Off. It’s greeted with nervous laughter.

But it’s not just Joey’s looks that’s led him to adorning the longest-running gay magazine on the planet. It’s the fact that he represents the zeitgeist of the society we live in today – one that’s radically different to when we first started as Gay Times, back in 1984.

It’s safe to say that we no longer trust our politicians. Our pop stars are, more often that not, force fed to us through relentless marketing machines. And our “celebrities” are more likely to be defined by sex tapes and whose arm they’re hanging off, rather than the good they put out into the world. Nothing seems real anymore – which has resulted in a generation of disenfranchised youth picking up video cameras and becoming their own role models. YouTubers have inherited the earth.

Take Joey, Tyler Oakley, Connor Franta, Troye Sivan, Calum McSwiggan and the recently-out Trevor Moran, for example. Between them, through the simple medium of YouTube, they’ve reached tens – if not hundreds – of millions of people in every corner of the world. And the thing that connects them all? They’re all gay.
