Meine damen und herren, mes dames et messieurs, ladies and gentlemen, he’s back! Yes, the perennially perky Will Young, beloved of gays everywhere, returns to the Dublin stage to reprise his role as Emcee in Kander and Ebb’s super-queer musical, Cabaret, at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre this month. Louise Redknapp plays Sally Bowles in this revival of the 1970s show based on Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin Stories, set towards the end of Germany’s Weimar Republic, when the city was a hotbed of sexual expression about to be snuffed out by the Nazi party.
Young was nominated for an Olivier Award when he first played Emcee in 2013, and his performance is a shift into darker territory from the pop-lite ballads he’s most well-known for.
