One note up and one note down can be a great way to ornament a chord sequence. Rod Fogg breaks out the decorations…


Let’s get started with figure 1, which has an A major chord with an added ninth. You play this one with your first finger flat and use the underside of that finger to mute the top E string. Then play A, followed by A major seven, and return to A to create a two-bar phrase. What we have is a decorated pattern based around an A major chord, starting a note above and then dipping down a note below.
