New Music

We round up and rate a selection of this month’s guitar-driven new releases

For Slowhand fans left nonplussed by Clapton’s anaemic autobiography a decade ago, this new feature-length biopic (released via Eagle Rock) and its soundtrack (on Sony Music) is a far more satisfying project. Faithfully following the documentary – directed by Oscar winner Lili Fini Zanuck – the OST acts as a wide-ranging greatest hits with five unreleased gems thrown in for good measure. Clapton’s links to the blues are a constant reference point as he reminisces about his first encounters with the genre via a kids TV show. Both Big Bill Broonzy and three cuts by Muddy Waters feature on the soundtrack, including a lascivious live version of I Got My Mojo Working from the latter’s appearance at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival. Ever the outsider – particularly in his early days – Eric often cut a lonely figure during his time with The Yardbirds, kicking them to the kerb when his blues authenticity would have been compromised by their pop success.
