While other projects have preoccupied me over the last few months, the almost-completed Martin kit body has been occupying a corner of my office. Every now and again, I’ve been picking it up, dangling it from one finger and enjoying listening to the tap tones. Taking a pause has also given me the chance to think a few things through and make some decisions about aspects of the kit I was unhappy with. This time around, I’ll be binding the body and making a rosewood fingerboard from scratch.

Let’s start with a confession and reveal that I don’t enjoy routing acoustic-guitar bodies for binding.

This is the fourth acoustic I’ve built, and I’ve never been entirely happy with the way the binding has turned out on any of the previous ones. There are two reasons for my ambivalence. Firstly, the sheer stress of knowing that one slip, or lapse in concentration, and the body can be ruined and all the hard work will be wasted – along with some lovely tonewood. Secondly, I’ve never been properly kitted out to do the job.
