Off ering refined takes on classic electric guitar designs, Avi Shabat’s instruments are as meticulously conceptualised as they are sought after. Dave Hunter goes in search of a Puma…

Letters from America

If you cycle through a lot of new guitars in the course of your daily grind – either as a player, reviewer, dealer, or collector – it’s easy to become jaded about the veracity of new off erings. Which is to say, it can be too easy for the ‘oh, it’s just another take on the…’ to set in. Yet even so, however many ‘just anothers’ you’ve played already this year, an artful new creation will still excite and enthral you when you pick it up, run your hand along the back of the neck, and start playing – thus reminding you that, yep, these guitars can be damn cool slabs of wood and wire now and then. Such it is with the Puma from Shabat Guitars. At first glance, it might appear to be ‘just another modified Jazzmaster-style guitar’.

Get it into your hands, however, and it quickly proclaims how a few intelligent twists on an otherwise familiar form can work toward creating something that’s entirely fresh. All of the above, and the fact that this is just one extremely wellbuilt guitar.
