Stress can send our blood pressure soaring, but over-indulging may be more harmful, explains British Heart Foundation senior dietitian Victoria Taylor

This Christmas…

WHENEVER YOU FEEL THE TENSION RISE, be reassured that for most people a temporary increase in stress doesn’t affect our overall health. However, for around 30% of adults in the UK, living with high blood pressure or hypertension is an everyday reality. It puts extra strain on our heart, blood vessels and other organs, such as the kidneys, brain and eyes. This increases our risk of many health problems including heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease and vascular dementia. Worryingly, most people don’t even know they’re suffering with hypertension, as there are no outward signs or symptoms. That’s why it’s essential that we have our blood pressure checked on a regular basis and follow these simple steps for staying healthy.
