MOST OF US NOW KNOW SOMEONE with type 2 diabetes, or its precursor, pre-diabetes. The CONDITIONS ARE WORRYINGLY WIDESPREAD and linked to excess weight. Two of my close relatives, who both struggled with their weight, were DIAGNOSED IN THEIR LATER YEARS. Research shows eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping active OFFER THE BEST CHANCE to avoid becoming another statistic.
However, if you’ve already been diagnosed with type 2, which is considered A CONDITION FOR LIFE, there may be some new hope. Early and (so far) small trials have shown that a restrictive VERY LOW-CALORIE DIET COULD BE EFFECTIVE at putting the condition into remission. Diabetes UK is currently helping to fund larger trials, but we won’t know the results until 2018.
