Four years ago, when I wanted to lose a stubborn half a stone of middleage spread, I followed the 5:2 diet. It worked. I’m prone to snacking and it helped reset my eating dial, so I became used to hunger pangs between meals. Recently, I got to meet fasting guru Michael Mosley and his GP wife Clare to talk about their health mission that goes far beyond losing a pesky half a stone. They’ve seen positive results for their new low-carb, Med-style fasting diet, which can put type 2 diabetes into remission. Fasting started as a personal crusade for Michael, who was diagnosed with type 2 six years ago. At his father’s funeral, a friend commented on how much like him he was (Mr Mosley senior, a type 2 diabetic, was overweight and had died from complications following a knee operation). A wake-up call!
