Overshadowed by vogue-ish chia, affordable ‘plain Jane’ sunflower seeds are bursting with essential nutrients. Sprinkle them, bake with them, or grab a handful for a nutritious snack

Most shops sell the striped variety (in their husks), which you can shell, but for convenience go for ready-toeat sunflower seeds, with their husk already removed. Give varieties flavoured with soy sauce, chill, etc, a miss, as they inevitably come with salt, sugar and additives such as anti-caking and glazing agents. In their natural state, sunflower seeds are a surprisingly filling nibble.
