And the winners are…

It’s been another bumper year for new products that aim to make healthy eating easier. Our 24 winners impressed us with their innovation and quality

Over the seven years since Healthy Food Guide launched, we’ve clocked a big leap in the quality and innovation of healthy food and drink launches. Free from, vegan and low sugar choices, in particular, are all pulsing. Gone are the days when cutting out gluten, dairy or animal products meant a severe compromise on taste, texture or nutrition, and the rise of natural sweeteners is making it easier for manufacturers to cut down on free sugars. We’re also seeing more product launches reflecting our recipe nutrition symbols. As well as low fat, low sats and low calorie, we’re now seeing many more products being sold with high-fibre, high-protein or high-calcium tags.

‘There’s no point in ticking all the boxes on the health front, though, if products feel like cardboard or have a strange aftertaste,’ says nutrition editor Amanda Ursell.

‘So our winners stand out, not just for their nutritional credentials, but also for their flavour and texture. We worked our way through a long list of contenders to shine the spotlight on those that can help you follow a delicious healthy diet. We hope you enjoy the results!’

Lizi’s Low Sugar Granola, £3.89/500g, supermarkets

TASTE The just-right level of sweetness comes from coconut, and the granola has a lovely nutty, seedy flavour.

NUTRITION This has around one-third of the amount of added sugars in a standard granola (just 1/2tsp per serving). One serving also provides a decent amount of protein (that’s 14% of your daily needs).

TRY IT Not just for breakfast – this is delicious sprinkled over cooked fruit for an easy crumble topping.

Per 50g serving (excluding milk)

250kcal, 13.6g fat, 2.1g saturates, 1.9g sugars, 4.9g fibre, 14.2g protein, 0g salt

Mornflake Gluten Free Superfast Oats, £2.50/500g, Sainsbury’s, Ocado

TASTE These gluten-free oats make a creamy porridge even if you make it with water.
