Trust us, you haven’t heard this before. It may be summertime, but when it comes to sun care, school’s still in session – notepads at the ready

If digital detoxes and the uptake of ayurveda are anything to go by, we’re all for looking to the past to further our wellness goals. And in the beauty sphere, joining venerable heroes like coconut oil and honey is ginkgo biloba. A tree native to China, ginkgo is used in traditional Chinese medicine – but it’s modern science that’s putting it firmly back in the beauty frame. Researchers studying ginkgo seed extract were guided by a 16th-century text to look at its antibacterial activity on pathogens that cause skin infections such as acne, eczema and dermatitis. Further research is needed, but these findings give validity to the historical use of gingko seeds as a topical antimicrobial. Plus, it’s rich in antioxidants to fight the free radicals that cause skin ageing. Find it in Trilogy Balancing Face Lotion (£27.50, 100ml).

About Healthy Magazine

Introducing the brand new healthy! We’ve got a fresh new look and have spruced up our content, including challenging new franchises, a dedicated vegan section and inspiring real life stories. Our central theme this issue is mental wellbeing – a challenge that doesn’t seem to be getting any easier, even as we are getting better at talking about it. Hopefully our ‘safe space’ is just that – somewhere you can explore and develop your own mental health. We’ve also investigated the gender disparity in football, explored the growing (though illegal) trend of microdosing, and chatted to chef turned wellness advocate Lorraine Pascale about her own mental wellbeing journey. Plus, we’ve brought in an expert panel to review all our content, ensuring you’re getting the very best and latest health, fitness, food, beauty and wellness advice. Find all this and more in the new issue of healthy
