The highlight of Christmas Day has to be the dinner. Whether you’re going traditional, or changing things up with a plant-based menu, the health benefits of a big old feast go way beyond what’s on your plate. Research has shown that eating as a family makes kids 35 per cent less likely to engage in disordered eating, 24 per cent more likely to eat healthier foods and 12 per cent less likely to be overweight, plus it’s associated with greater academic achievement. It’s also been linked to more positive social interaction and improved psychological wellbeing. But before you bust out the Buck’s Fizz, there’s one caveat; when sitting down for sprouts and cracker jokes, leave your phones elsewhere. US research has found even minor phone use during a meal is enough to ruin diners’ ability to stay in the moment, seriously denting enjoyment. Hold that tweet ‘til after the figgy pud, people.
