They’re as much a Christmas tradition as flimsy paper crowns and falling asleep in front of The Two Ronnies. Clementines, along with tangerines and satsumas, are hybrids of the mandarin, and are traditional stocking fillers thanks to the legend of Saint Nicholas. Folklore has it that when he learned of three sisters unable to marry as they didn’t have enough money for a dowry, he dropped golden balls down the chimney, where they landed in stockings by the fire. The oranges we give today are symbols of the gold he gave.
