What does a sexy perfume smell like? Heady, carnal or mysterious perhaps, with a hint of sultry patchouli and musk. How about cave dirt and overripe figs? It might sound like a step too far, but soon we could all be ditching our floral fragrances for something, well, a little ‘dirtier’, say experts.
The best-selling perfumes over the past decade have been characterised by fruity or floral notes – think Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb, Chanel Chance and Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue. ‘Notes of flowers give the overall impression of candy,’ says fragrance specialist and perfumer Roja Dove. ‘Interestingly, if you ask a man to choose a scent for a woman, he will generally not pick a sweet one.’ But now the goalposts have moved as a new wave of perfumes, based on natural human musks, claim to tap into our most instinctive sexual desires.
