Time to un-wined

With summer comes hazy hangovers – but what if we said you could avoid them – without going sober? Enter Winefulness, a drinking meditation. Practice the quirky mindful technique and instead of the regret that follows sinking a few too many, you’ll feel relaxed and positively present. From the people of Australia (who know a thing or two about wine) Winefulness involves a six-step practice: Look and listen – notice the colours, light and movement of the wine in the glass, then gently observe the noises around you; Smell and breathe – deeply inhale the wine’s scent, breathing softly into the belly; then taste and feel – sip and hold it in your mouth, focusing on the flavour. Hold for as long as comfortable, then swallow, noticing the wine trickling through your body, while you take note of any sensations. So, rather than focusing on the elusive ‘moment,’ here you can concentrate on good old tangible wine, thus blocking out distractions and becoming mindful – think of it as a boozy shortcut. Winefulness can be used as a technique to cut down on drinking or to relax. So next time you’re at a barbecue, savour the wine and the moment.
