You’ll have heard the term self care, and you may well have felt your toes curl, or your eyes roll – it sounds like a self-indulgent free pass to pamper yourself, but it’s way more grounded – and important – than that. ‘It’s about knowing what you need, and then being able to give it to yourself,’ explains clinical psychologist Dr Maxine Campion (relatingpsychology.com). ‘Because if you’re not meeting your needs, you will either end up feeling overwhelmed by them, or you’ll find some other means of getting them met, either helpfully or unhelpfully. You could turn to other people to have your needs met, but that can drain that relationship, whereas if you are able to take the time to listen to yourself and meet your own needs, you can achieve emotional balance.’ Here are eight ways to take care of yourself.
