People who commute through natural environments daily have better mental health – that was the conclusion of recent Spanish research involving 3600 people from four European cities. The impact was stronger still among active commuters who walk, jog or cycle through nature. Importantly, the natural environments didn’t have to be particularly pretty or rugged, just outdoor spaces with ‘green’ and/or ‘blue’ natural elements – and that included street trees. So even if you aren’t lucky enough to be able to stroll through a beautiful park, cycle beside a babbling brook or jog through rolling hills in the morning, if you tweak your commute and swap an urban route for nearby tree-lined streets, your mental health will benefit. Happy travels.
