Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) isn’t a disease per se, but a collection of symptoms and signs relating to a functional gastrointestinal disorder. It’s fairly common – affecting around one in five people, with women twice as likely to experience it as men.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms vary. Diarrhoea can occur, as can constipation – some people fluctuate between the two. You may also notice a mucus-like discharge with your stools. These bowel symptoms are usually accompanied by abdominal pain (typically cramps) and bloating.
