Developed as a treatment to improve the appearance of most varicose veins, sclerotherapy involves injecting the vein with a solution that’s known as a sclerosant (generally a salt solution), which scars and blocks the vein. Over time, the body destroys the vein and it disappears. With foam sclerotherapy, a small amount of the sclerosant is mixed into a foam, meaning the procedure can then be used to treat larger veins than with traditional sclerotherapy. An ultrasound is used to monitor the position of the needle and the progress of the foam along the vein.
