How the well-to-do women of Venice stood above the crowd

When it comes to ‘chopines’, size really did matter. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, women in Venice – and also Spain – vied to outdo one another with the height of their platform shoes. And seeing that some chopines towered as high as 50cm, in flagrant violation of a 1430 Venetian law restricting them to three inches, this blue-silk status symbol appears quite tame. Before they got enough practise walking in the frameraising footwear, some noblewomen required servants to support them on each side whenever they went out.
