FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE PASSES AWAY
The news that the woman who transformed nursing and made giant strides in healthcare reform had died on 13 August 1910 sent Britain into mourning. When the nation had joined the Crimean War more than five decades earlier, field hospitals were appalling, with overcrowded wards, few supplies and infection rife. Hygiene was such a low priority that more soldiers died from disease, like dysentery than battle. Tis was nothing new but the war was being photographed and widely reported, so the public had to face the truth of these conditions.
