Home Farmer Magazine  |  June 2016 issue
Welcome to the June issue of Home Farmer – the magazine featuring possibly the single busiest month for the nation’s gardeners. It’s a time when combatting weeds coincides with maximising the harvest, and rest assured we have some great ideas, both for increasing crops and producing (and using) some truly delicious ingredients for your table. We also look at a way that small-scale dairy farmers can still produce milk profitably, and our livestock section this month includes chickens (or more specifically, their eggs), bees, and alpacas. We also have an abridged version of a section from Tim and Dot Tyne’s new book, Viable Self-Sufficiency which we think you will find fascinating as it explains a little about the motivation behind the smallholding in Dot’s popular ‘smallholder diary’ articles each month. For recipes we begin a new series by Gaby Bartai aimed specifically at managing gluts, together with articles on producing meat-free sausages, brawn, and fruit ice lollies, including a number based on well-known cocktails exclusively for our older readers. Then we finish off with two very different special projects – producing artist’s paints from common and garden plants, and creating a typical large pirate’s treasure chest (or storage trunk) from pallets. We just hope you enjoy reading it and completing the different projects as much as we enjoyed putting it all together.
