I’m an incurable home bargain hunter!

Renovating her 1950s bungalow set Kate Harpum on a mission to seek out the best coastal-style homewares on a very strict budget

Welcome to my home

A bit about me

I’m Kate Harpum, I’m married to Roger and we have four children between us, aged between 11 and 19.

Where I live

My home is a fivebedroom 1950s semi, which was originally a small two-bedroom bungalow. We’ve lived here since 2011.

What I wanted to change

Everything! We gutted the interior, replastered all the walls, put in a new kitchen and new bathrooms and extended outwards, as well as upwards.

How I made it my own

I created a coastalstyle interior by whitewashing the walls and using soft greys and blues, then I furnished it with upcycled finds and high street bargains.

My favourite part

I especially like the kitchen and dining area as it’s the family space I aways dreamed I would have one day.

About Homestyle

I always feel incredibly lucky that it’s part of my job to go around the country visiting beautiful homes to shoot for the magazine, and this month was particularly special. I was so inspired by the home of Gigi Eligoloff (this month’s cover girl, see page 16). She has filled her small London home almost entirely from lost and second-hand treasures, yet the result is a relaxed and surprisingly sophisticated style that can’t help but make you smile. She really ticked the HomeStyle box when we discovered she had bought her entire kitchen on Gumtree for £900! Another showstopper this issue is the upcycling feature – turn to page 85 right now for the most stunning cupboard revamp. It’s proof that breathing life back into things other people don’t want can create items that will be treasured for generations to come. And if you’re about to embark on your own makeover, don’t miss our top trend hot list on page 74 – with these ideas, you won’t just be one small step ahead of the crowds, you’ll be one huge HomeStyle leap!
