Part 3: The Great Upcycling Challenge

If your budget is more shabby than chic, the thought of kitting your home out with designer one-off pieces can seem like a faraway fantasy. Or is it? Two of our esteemed HomeStyle designers, Juliet Bawden and Amanda Russell, have joined forces this issue to demonstrate how easy it is to transform cheap buys into pieces that are worthy of a boutique price tag. This isn’t just upcycling – this is luxe-cycling, and boy, have they done a spectacular job. Starting with their charity shop sweep, Juliet and Amanda picked up a second-hand cabinet, two old luggage racks and a whole range of picture frames, and still had change from £40 – just goes to show how far your money can stretch when you shop outside the box! Then they hit the high street and selected three budget buys from Matalan, Home base and Ikea to work their fabulous magic on. You can vote for your favourite set by tweeting #charity shop sweep or and tell us which project you liked best.

About Homestyle

I always feel incredibly lucky that it’s part of my job to go around the country visiting beautiful homes to shoot for the magazine, and this month was particularly special. I was so inspired by the home of Gigi Eligoloff (this month’s cover girl, see page 16). She has filled her small London home almost entirely from lost and second-hand treasures, yet the result is a relaxed and surprisingly sophisticated style that can’t help but make you smile. She really ticked the HomeStyle box when we discovered she had bought her entire kitchen on Gumtree for £900! Another showstopper this issue is the upcycling feature – turn to page 85 right now for the most stunning cupboard revamp. It’s proof that breathing life back into things other people don’t want can create items that will be treasured for generations to come. And if you’re about to embark on your own makeover, don’t miss our top trend hot list on page 74 – with these ideas, you won’t just be one small step ahead of the crowds, you’ll be one huge HomeStyle leap!
