LIFE AFTER VALEGRO:
As a seminal year for the double Olympic champion draws to an end, Charlotte Dujardin is in a reflective mood. In a hoodie, breeches and furry slippers, perched on a bar stool in her show-home tidy kitchen (bought with the proceeds from the sale of her first grand prix horse, Fernandez), it would be easy to underestimate how far the 31-year-old has come. When we first met a decade ago, she was the reverential girl who came to the tack shop where I worked, with her mum looking for some double bridle bits that her idol Carl Hester had instructed her to buy for Fernandez. Since then, Carl and Charlotte have morphed into an extraordinary platonic power couple, with perpetual worldwide requests to attend shows, do signings and represent brands.
