The Marwari Diaries

Discovering the traditions and treasures of India through curly ears.

The national horse of India, named after the Marwari region, is easily recognized by its curly ear tips. Originally bred for battle, the horses were known for their loyalty and endurance. Once near extinction during British rule in India, the majestic Marwari breed is now a national treasure.

On the Unicorn Trails Fort and Palace Ride to the Pushkar Camel Fair, intrepid riders can experience the Marwari’s native country through the breed’s unique ears. Long canters in the sand, sunset rides and luxurious glamping are all part of the adventure, but the power and personality of the Marwari is what touched me most—as was the care taken to provide them with the utmost of comfort.

My first view of Delhi is through a car window well after midnight. It encompasses colorful lights draped over buildings in crowded streets with people rushing about, buying sweets and gifts from roadside vendors. Mountains of marigolds on carts wait to be purchased as décor for Diwali festival, one of the most celebrated festivals in India corresponding with the Hindu New Year.

Our host and guide Thakur Raghuvendra Singh leads the group.
