This month we spend some quality time with the always-funky Tal Bergman. His latest Rock Candy Funk Party album, We Want Groove, has been on constant rotation since we reviewed it in issue 113, and his recent visit to our shores alongside blues-guitar legend Joe Bonamassa proved to be a completely sold-out and incredibly well received tour. Alongside our interview with Tal, we also have our review of him in action when we caught him live at one of these recent UK dates. We also have an exclusive chat with Glen Power; a drummer whose name may not be immediately familiar, but anyone who has turned on a radio or TV over the last few years will have no doubt heard Glen’s tasteful playing and silky backing vocals whenever he performs with stadium fillers The Script. We also catch up with Simple Minds legend Mel Gaynor as the band tour the UK to get the lowdown on his long and varied career. We are also joined by session-supremo Ash Soan for a brief-yet-informative chat and US drummer Mark Guiliana gives us the latest on his recent, highly creative projects.
We also bring you our verdicts on the freshest new gear including the new APK Heritage Kit from Premier: a lovely, jazzy little offering that may be small but packs a serious punch. DW’s latest addition to their Collectors series of snare drums also comes under scrutiny as we check out one of the most unique drums available thanks to its concrete shell. We spend time with several hand-made, Turkish crash cymbals new from Murat Diril as well as testing Vic Firth’s High Fidelity Earplugs. Percussion-wise, we take a look at Latin Percussions latest: their new quinto and bongos made from exotic Durian wood, while Rhythm Tech’s affordable-yet-high quality Eclipse Series bongos also get our attention.
Plus our usual mixture of tuition, features, multi-media reviews and news including our report from this years Jobeky Custom and Vintage Drum Show and a very special artist announcement about this years London Drum Show.
