Thomas Muir Anniversary Lecture 2017

Scottish historian, cultural activist and former European Parliament translator

MANY readers of iScot will be familiar with Murray Armstrong’s splendid book The Liberty Tree: The Stirring Story of Thomas Muir and Scotland’s First Fight for Democracy, published in 2014 – appropriately enough. Armstrong’s Liberty Tree is a gripping narrative of the life of the Scottish radical Thomas Muir of Huntershill (1765-1799), whose rigged show-trial in 1793 saw him sentenced to an unprecedented fourteen years of transportation to Australia for the crime of ‘unconscious sedition’. The book’s title alludes to the anonymous poem ‘The Tree of Liberty’, sometimes attributed to Robert Burns himself, which contains this glorious stanza:

Wi’ plenty o’ sic trees, I trow,
