“Not since Iraq,” Paul Mason posted to Facebook, “have I seen BBC News working at propaganda strength like this.” Mason, Channel 4 News’ economics editor and Labour Party activist, wrote this indictment of his former employer in response to the state broadcaster’s coverage of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum days before the vote, at a time when thousands of Scottish people were protesting outside the BBC’s Glasgow headquarters. “Angry nationalists,” as the Independent’s Chris Green described them, were protesting what they perceived to be the corporation’s lies and biased reporting in favour of the union.
