Watching Ross County can be Dangerous
With the vast amount of crime fiction slushing about in bookshops and libraries, how do you choose what to read next? The obvious answer is to go for the authors you like. However, it only takes a few days to read a crime novel, especially if it’s a good one and you can’t stop turning the pages. And the next book by that author won’t be appearing until next year (one a year is the usual production rate for successful authors). So inevitably you have to look around. Then you discover that many are much of a muchness: the usual serial killer/child abductor/person trying to cover up their murky past/1930s retro country house whodunnit/etc. If you’re looking for simple escapism that’s fine. Many authors are very predictable and regularly produce just what readers want from them. But if you want a bit more, to be challenged a little, it’s worth looking for authors who are a bit out of the box, a bit less predictable. One I’d suggest is Douglas Lindsay.
