Dear Major,

Is it wrong for journalists to ‘out’ people against their wishes and if so, should they apologise? Papa’s_Got_A_Brand_New_Hag

Dear Captain,

Interesting that you should ask this, because I was once (erroneously) outed when it was reported on the front page of the Sunday Herald that I had been spoted ordering a strawberry daiquiri in the Athletic Arms on Angle Park Terrace, in contrast to my usual gimlet (4 parts gin and one part gimlet). For this I (and my sponsors) obviously demanded an immediate apology due to factual errors in the story, principally because as anyone knows who’s tried to order a lager tops in the Diggers, they definitely don’t do cocktails. However, to answer your question, as a general rule it depends on who’s doing the outing. If it is a right-wing hack and the outed person is a British Nationalist then that’s “not OK.” However, if the outer is a prominent let-wing journalist with a track record of writing highly inluential but unread think-pieces for socialist websites, and the outed person is a Scottish Nationalist, well obviously that is “OK”. And yes, of course they should apologise, especially for causing so much inconvenience to the journalist in question.
